Default Death to a funeral in WoW

I was reading PC Gamer a few days ago, and I read about in-game funerals in WoW. There had been a funeral that was ransacked (sp?) by a guild known as Serenity Now, and since then, many different opinions have been voiced by different people. For those of you that don't know, a girl that played WoW had died in real life, and there was a funeral being held ON A PvP SERVER, and everyone who attended the funeral had their swords stashed elsewhere. I feel that it is the mourners fault for setting up a funeral on a PvP server, where anyone can come and hack anyone up (Wilderness in Runescape, anyone?), and again their fault for opting for everyone to come unarmed. Then again, it was not very...Er...Nice, if you will, for Serenity Now to come and kill every single person attending the service. Even though it was within their rights, as their is no rule against it, it was somewhat contradictory to their name..Serenity doesn't include killing mourners at a funeral. Still, it was pretty cool (Link to the video of the whole thing: Serenity Now Guild). What's your opinion? I'm kind of split.

PvP Server means there is going to have PvP. They knew this when they organized... They should have been prepared for it.

If they want to play like a bunch of assholes, who are we to say that they can or can not if the rules of the server say that they can.

A classic case of in-game mentality intruding on real life emotions. In RL the people of Serenity Now would never dream of doing something like this (hazing a public function) because there are consequences to their actions. The RL versions of these victums would easily bend them--each and every one--over a knee and spank their butts red till bleeding. In game, I'm sure that SN's days are numbered. If they aren't hunted down and camped to the point that their characters become useless to play, they should be hounded into outcast status by the WoW community at large.

This, of course, can give no great solice to those players who still mourn the loss of their friend.

To those who were affected by this, I offer empathy.

Out of curiosity: those who were responsible for making the funeral intended to make their own video for the family of this young woman. Did they carry through?

PvP server or not.. Its stupid that they went and attacked everyone at that funeral.

They held that funeral because that person was a part of their community and what do people do? Ruin it.. that's just pathetic.

Thats pretty sad what they did. Sure, having it on a PvP server was stupid, but nobody should be dishonored like that.

Old news, true a life was lost but many people die due to games, many of those crazed people saying they will suicide themself and see you in the afterlife, "gaming afterlife.

As to some it was hiralous, to crash a funeral and pillage and destroy, plus the music was great.

I don't think personally Serenity Now did anything wrong.

I'd go into some speech about my thoughts, but It'd be worthless because most people wouldn't care about my ideas.

I'll simply say, I woulda done the same thing...Alot of free kills. Their fault if they reduced someone's death to some social gathering on a PvP server in a game.

I could definitely see this as a problem if the party had somehow been crashed while it was on a Roleplaying server or something like that, but it sounds to me like someone just saw a chance at free kills and took it.

It's approximately equivelent to holding a wedding ceremony in the middle of a river infested with starving piranhas. Can you really blame the guild for taking the opportunity in an environment that rewards them for it?

Sure it was in bad taste, since it happened a few months ago they got a lot of flack.

That's what you get for holding a gathering in a pvp area. Try holding a funeral on the second map of Heroes Ascent and see what happens.

so the expectation of some common courtesy and respect for a human being was wrong of them ?

these are games people ... in anything there are things that should transcend the daily BS we all waddle through

to desecrate something designed to respect a real person, shows only that those who did it, and anyone that condones it or blames it on the planners ... as being complete idiots

as said, just because you can, doesnt mean you have to .. and some restraint would show a measure of maturity..something these people were clearly lacking

so in short, to those, and anyone that defends them .. seriously, shame on you for being a extraordinarily poor example of a human being

karma is a bitch, something i hope you find out one day

Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm not a WoW player), but don't they get some sort of reward for making the kills?

If so, I can see the action (while undoubtedly rude and uncalled for) as having some sort of reasoning behind it. If not... wow. Yeah, assholes, the lot of them.

If you watch the video, you will see that her guild set up and hosted the thing via the official WoW forums. What bothers me about your post (and bear with me here) is that you imply that you consider a simulated funeral in a computer game to be just as important as a real one. It isn't. It's quite a nice thought for her guild to do this, but if that is ALL they want to do to remember her, that's a problem. It's being sad that someone died so now you can't play a game online with them rather than just being sad, and that's demeaning to that person, because you are only concerned with their virtual manifestation instead of them as a real person.

Does that excuse the immaturity of the guys who crashed the thing? No. Did they get punished for it? Hell yes they did. Look at the thing on the WoW forums and you'll see that mob justice was inacted on the situation and the guys who crashed the funeral got royally screwed (at least if I'm reading the posts correctly).

Now, does the fact that they told the mourners to come to the funeral ON A PvP SERVER, UNARMED excuse the slaughter? Again, no, but it does teach us all a lesson I hope. Do not try to do anything overly serious in any online game, especially if there is the possibilty of it getting sacked. There will always be jackasses just looking for such an opportunity.
